Rain Forest

Rain Forest Poem
By Linda Ruggieri

Look inside a rain forest!

It's a very special place.

You'll see frogs, and birds, and monkeys

And layers of green lace.

Look inside a rain forest!

Where so many trees can grow.

Just stop and look and listen,

To the sights and sounds and show!.

Rain Forest Song
(Tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb)

The rain forest has four layers,

four layers, four layers.

The rain forest has four layers,

where trees and plants grow.

At the top is the emergent layer,

emergent layer, emergent layer.

At the top is the emergent layer,

where birds and butterflies go.

Next is the canopy,

canopy, canopy.

Next is the canopy,

where snakes and toucans go

Next is the understory,

understory, understory,

Next is the understory,

where jaguars and leopards go.

At the bottom is the forest floor,

forest floor, forest floor,

At the bottom is the forest floor,

where few animals will roam.

Rain Forest Facts

A rain forest is dark and shady.

The largest rain forest is in Brazil.

The weather in a rain forest is hot and rainy.

Some rainforest monkeys are omnivores, eating both animals and plants.

1 out of 4 ingredients in our medicine is from rainforest plants.

Rain Forest Layers

The Emergent Layer

In the emergent layer, giant trees stand above the rest of the rain forest.

Eagles, monkeys, insect-eating bats, snakes, and butterflies live there.

The tallest trees can grow as much as 200 feet above the forest floor with trunks

that measure up to 16 feet around.

Sunlight is plentiful up here.

The Canopy Layer

It is the main layer of the rain forest.

Many animals live in this area since food is abundant.

Many snakes, monkeys, sloths, bats, parrots, hummingbirds, toucan, and tree frogs.

Most canopy trees have smooth, oval leaves that come to a point.

The Understory Layer

It is dark, and cool.

The plants in this area seldom grow to 12 feet.

Trees, bushes, and vines grow here.

Many animals live here including jaguars, leopards, parakeets, and red-eyed tree frogs.

The Rainforest Floor Layer

It is very dark because sunlight cannot shine through the layers of trees and plants.

Almost no plants grow in this layer.

Large mammals such as giant anteaters, and tapirs live in here.

Many insects live here including termites, cockroaches, beetles,

centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, and earthworms.
