Classroom Storytelling |
Storytelling seems to work
best in active, vibrant rooms, where teachers are curious about children, and
children are permitted to be curious about learning. Stories become the
foundation of our children's emotional and intellectual education. Stories can
be concrete materials young children use to develop, expand, and increase their
language skills. For children, stories always have something to do with life in
the present; their purpose is to help young children answer questions about the
world as they experience it. New children who read stories regularly will become
intimate with language.
GOALS: 1. To foster the children's knowledge of stories in general. 2. To foster their interest in writing their own stories These goals unite in the children's development as both readers and writers.
I participated for one year on a Classroom Storytelling Project at Rice University. During this time I had the opportunity to implement the dictation and dramatization activities of the Storytelling Project on a regular basis in my classroom and to examine other ways to enhance the literacy learning
